Bright Fireball Streaks Over Northern Vietnam, Filmed on Dashcam

This scan turned up one new report that clears our bar for credibility: a bright streak of light filmed over northern Vietnam on Sunday evening. Astronomers think it was a large meteor. Below we cover what was reported, what evidence exists, and what's still unconfirmed, plus a heads-up about a NASA spacecraft that could make its own fireball soon.

Bright streak filmed over northern Vietnam (Nov 1)

What was reported: At around 6:00 pm local time on Sunday, November 1, 2026, a bright light streaked across the sky over several northern Vietnamese provinces and cities, according to Tuoi Tre News. A resident of Lao Cai Province told the paper they saw it shortly after sunset.

Evidence: Tuoi Tre published screenshots and dashcam footage of the streak. Video of the event also spread widely on social media. The paper did not say how many people saw or recorded it, and no fragments have been reported on the ground.

Likely explanation: Dang Vu Tuan Son, president of the Vietnam Astronomy & Cosmology Association, told Tuoi Tre that the images point almost certainly to a meteor, probably an unusually large one (a fireball) that burned up before reaching the ground. A second researcher called it a possible meteorite fragment but said that view is preliminary and needs more data. No official identification has been issued.

Verifiability: Moderate. The report comes from a national news outlet, with a named local witness and dashcam video. The explanation from an astronomy expert is plausible, but it hasn't been confirmed by any instrument data.

Heads-up: NASA's Swift observatory is coming down

This isn't a sighting, but it could cause some. NASA says its Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is expected to reenter Earth's atmosphere in the next few weeks. As of October 28, no date, time window or landing area had been announced. Most of the spacecraft is expected to burn up, and any surviving pieces would most likely fall into the ocean or unpopulated areas. A slow, fragmenting fireball over the coming weeks could well be Swift, so check reentry trackers before calling it unexplained.

Before you post that video, run it through our Is It a UFO? checker. It walks you through the usual suspects: meteors, satellites, Starlink trains, planets, drones and rocket launches. If you'd like to get steadier footage next time, a simple phone tripod mount makes a big difference when you're filming the night sky.
